Det gør viWhat we do

What we do in Gambia Media Support

Gambia Media Support was founded in 2006 by a group of Danish journalists, photographers and other media professionals with the an aim to strengthen the quality and capacity of the Gambian media – educational as well as technical.

On two missions to the Gambia in 2005, a preparatory group developed the objective and scope of the organisation with Gambian media stakeholders, particularly Gambia Press Union (GPU), whom we chose as our partner after having exchanged ideas since 2002.

Our main activities are professional and organisational capacity building with the Gambian Counterpart, GPU, as well as collegial sparring, training and counselling with Gambia media professionals.

The organisation works for:

  • Creating and maintaining a professional media environment
  • Freedom of the press and to collect information
  • Pluralism of the press
  • Public service ideals and ethical standards

Independent of political, religious and economical interests
The association is independent of political, religious and economical interests, and has a democratic view of the role of the press in society. The association bases its activities on the professional and ethical standards for good press ethics that are widely acknowledged in the international media community.

Statutes of Gambia Media Support

How do we generate media development?

Gambia Media Support works to achieve its aims in several ways. Among them are:

  1. Colleague to Colleague cooperation, support and training
  2. Assistance to the Gambia Press Union
  3. Advocacy for the press and freedom of press
  4. Donation of supplies

1. Colleague to Colleague Support
A leading principle in our work is that colleagues support colleagues on a voluntary and international level. The support can take the shape of cooperation between Gambian and International professionals on several levels:

  • Concrete, on the job collaboration, such as a week’s worth of teamwork and team reporting
  • Exchange of ideas, from sparring and coaching to mentoring and consulting
  • Collaboration with regard to training programs and courses, from participating in workshops to giving lectures and teaching.

2. Assistance to the Gambian Press Union
Gambia Media Support also assists Gambia Press Union and other collaborative partners in the development of projects for media development, and in fundraising and finding partner organisations that work professionally with media development, training, etc.

3. Advocacy for the Press and Freedom of Press
Another fundamental principle is that the members of Gambia Media Support and the organisation per se, advocate for the press and freedom of the press in Gambia, especially with regard to the public and the governments in the European countries, who makes up many of the tourists to Gambia.

3. Donation of IT equipment
Gambia Media Support also provides the media and journalists in Gambia with supplies, for example by recycling used equipment and by subscriptions.
